Kurt would have turned 57 this year... The impact that he left on the world is unmatched and his music still resonates with so many hearts and souls all around the planet. He has also inspired thousands of guitar players around the world (us included) and showed us that we don't have to be a virtuoso to be expressive - it is all about melody and attitude.
When Fender company first approached Cobain around 1993, he was already well-known as a connoisseur of short-scale guitars - Mustangs and Jaguars. Most of his Mustangs were made in Japan in the early 1990s and his famous Jaguar was a 1960s model, albeit heavily modified. Fender wanted to build a special new model to commemorate Cobain's impact on the music landscape of the era.
Cobain famously combined the designs of his favourite Mustang and Jaguar - and a Jag-Stang was born! Kurt liked the first prototypes and even played them live a few times, but unfortunately before the bureaucratic machine that was Fender corporation managed to get their stuff together and release this guitar to the public, Cobain was already gone.
First models reached the markets around late 1995, but the first official year of production was 1996. These first Jag-Stangs were only offered for a few years, with the second Japanese reissue batch coming through around 2002 and the third reissue batch made in Mexico introduced in 2021, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the album that changed it all - "Nevermind".
Beautiful Fiesta Red finish and the pearloid pickguard provide a striking contrast to the dark rosewood fretboard neck. Short-scale neck is a true pleasure to play, frets have plenty of life left in them and the original tuners work smoothly. The body has plenty of dings and dents from years of active playing, but there is no structural damage or modifications. Neck has minimal wear with just a few dents on the headstock; pickguard is scratched in places.
Original pickups gift instant Nirvana tones: mellower neck single-coil for "Come as you are" and "Polly" and powerful bridge humbucker for the louder numbers. Original Mustang style slider switching gives 4 distinct tones including both pickups in parallel as well as both out-of-phase for a honkier funkier sound. Over the years, pickup covers have mellowed into a creamier off-white colour.
The original Mustang solid barrel saddle bridge and Fender Dynamic Vibrato system allow for very nice body resonance and sustain and precise intonation adjustment. This guitar is full of life, both amplified and unplugged.
Kurt's legacy lives on!
