Some guitars age gracefully. This one aged like it picked up a few habits, a couple stories, and absolutely refuses to apologize for either.
Here we have a 1986 Fender Japan ‘72 Thinline Telecaster (TN72-70) in natural ash, which is a classy way of saying: “yes, I’m semi-hollow, yes, I’m loud unplugged, and yes, I will absolutely judge your clean tone.”
First off — it’s a Thinline from the very first run of Fender Japan vintage reissues. So it’s already cooler and much more rare than a standard Tele. That little f-hole isn’t just decoration, it’s there to let the guitar fill its lungs with air and sing loud and proud!
The neck is a comfy vintage C-shape maple, glossed up like it’s still the ‘80s, with a 7.25" radius and nicely rolled edges. Translation: it feels broken-in in the best way. Not “worn out,” more like “I’ve done this before, don’t worry about it.” Frets show moderate wear, which just means someone already did the hard work of making it feel right.
Weight is a very friendly 3.3 kg, thanks to the semi-hollow ash body. Resonant, airy, and just lively enough that you’ll notice it the second you hit an open chord. It doesn’t just make sound — it participates.
Hardware is all original and doing its job without complaint.
Gotoh vintage tuners (aged, like everything cool), and a hardtail bridge with six saddles — so you get that classic Tele snap and actual intonation, which feels like cheating but in a good way.
Now, the real personality: Fender Japan Wide Range humbuckers (ceramic magnets).
These are not your polite, well-behaved humbuckers. They’ve got bite, they’ve got output, and they sit somewhere between “Telecaster twang” and “I might accidentally join a rock band tonight.” Clean tones are warm but still articulate. Add gain and suddenly it’s thick, punchy, and a little bit rude. In a charming way.
Electronics are original — simple 3-way switch, full-size pots, ceramic cap. No nonsense, no surprises, nothing to “figure out.” You plug in, you play, you sound like you meant it.
Condition? Oh, it’s been used.
This Tele comes with plenty of surface wear, dents, dings, fretboard wear — the full “this guitar did not spend its life under a bed” package. The neck has a few marks, the body has stories. It’s past the point of worrying about the first scratch, which is honestly very freeing.
And then there’s the extras:
Tweed hardcase with burgundy plush, vintage strap, cable, manual, pick, even the key.
It’s basically arriving with its own little time capsule, like “here’s everything you need to pretend you’ve owned it since 1986.”
So what is it?
A semi-hollow Tele that’s a bit louder, a bit looser, and a bit more interesting than it strictly needs to be.
It’s got history, personality, and just enough attitude to keep things fun.
Plug it in and it won’t try to impress you.
It’ll just sound good… and let you figure out the rest.
This instrument received a full professional setup with deep body clean, neck deep clean and full electronics check. Restringed with Ernie Ball 10-46 nickel-plated steel strings.

Please note that although we put our heart and soul and also all our knowledge into every single guitar we sell, a setup is a personal preference. However, we try to get the best playability out of every guitar and set them up so you can play both rhythm and lead. We also pull them all apart to clean and check every single component and replace all unreliable parts with new ones, from dodgy pots to the whole wiring, tuners, string trees, nuts and etc. All the work done is described in detail in the listing.
We make sure that every guitar we sell is problem free and take full responsibility for the accuracy of our listing descriptions. All photographs are done by a professional photographer and processed on a calibrated monitor. Some colours might look slightly different on your monitor, but we will always put the official Fender colour name in the listing description, so please study pictures of other guitars with the same colour if you are unsure. We focus on finding great quality guitars and making them reliable and inspiring to play.
